'Hi You're through to Zap-bang Tech Support.
We apologise if you've had to wait too long. My name's Steven. How can I help you.'
'Hi there. Uhh...well I'm using the new Zap-pix program for a presentation I'm doing this week and it won't do what I need it to.'
'Well Mr...?'
'Phipps. Roger Phipps'
'Mr Phipps. The application is new and has our latest features available which allow you to do anything you want to. Can I ask what you are trying to do?'
'I was trying to create a presentation. I really need to get it done by Friday!'
'Okay. Calm down please sir. We know all the little problems that can occur. All I need from you is to clearly go through what is happening on your computer leading up to the error and maybe that will give me a clue.'
'I'm sorry for sounding exasperated, but it really is important that I get this right.'
'Crucial business meeting is it sir?'
'If you must know I'll be addressing all of the major world leaders at a secret meeting.'
'Wow. If I may say so, that is impressive and I'll do everything I can to sort this out for you.'
'You have my gratitude.'
'Well, now if we can go back to exactly what the problem was?'
'I was trying to import an image into the presentation and the program freezes.'
'Can I ask what format it is?'
'I imported it from google earth and edited it in 'Paint'. Then I tried to insert it into my presentation in Zap-pix.'
'Right. I see. Can I ask why you didn't use Zap-pix to to edit the image? I'm sure it would have been easier for yourself.'
'Actually, I'm just used to using Paint. I only got Zap-pix yesterday when I realised I needed to give my presentation a bit of pizazz!'
'Well, Zap-pix will certainly do that sir. I'm guessing when you edited the image in Paint something happened to it. Did you save it as a jpeg, gif or bitmap file?'
'I don't remember choosing anything.'
'Well, it probably saved it as bitmap then. That means the file size probably increased quite dramatically after you edited it. I recommend taking the original image...you do still have the original image don't you?'
'Yes. I'm not that inexperienced with computers. I just usually have guys that do stuff for me. My...previous designer is...indisposed.'
'I'm sorry to hear that. Well with such an important meeting to be at I'll give you as much help as you need and I can walk you through it if needed.'
'That would be appreciated. Where do you want me to begin?'
'If you're sure you've got the original file then we can just open it up in an edit window within Zap-pix.'
'Okay. Just give me a minute. Opening program...Does Zap-pix have to spend an eternity listing all of its constituent parts and those who worked on it?'
'Sorry sir. It's not my call. As long as its all moving though and not stuck on one particular part then at least you know the program will open.'
'I guess it makes a change from a progress bar.'
'Zap-pix has a lot of power sir and I think it just likes to make people wait for it.'
'Hah! Yes, that sounds like something I'll look forward to.'
'Excuse me?'
'Never mind. It's open now. Where do I go next?'
'There should be a toolbar with a menu across the top?'
'Yes, I see it.'
'Go to 'File' then choose 'Import'.'
'Done...and done.'
'Now find your file and click OK'
'It's there now without my edits.'
'Okay so this your blank slate. As you know Zap-pix can do slideshows and I'll take you through editing your picture. Other features you can use at a later date include animation...'
'It does animation?'
'Yes.'
'Can I animate my map?'
'I don't see why not. What would you like to do?'
'Originally I was going to just change the colour of certain countries between each slide and label each, phases 1, 2 and 3.'
'Right.'
'But...do you think...would it be possible that I could animate a little rocket landing on the countries and going 'Boom!' before I change the colour?'
'I'm sure there'll be something suitable you could use in the clip art provided.'
'Good! Good! That should help get my point across well.'
'Is this a peace conference you're attending?'
'In a manner of speaking. Heh-he! Can we get on with it?'
'Sorry for being nosey. I didn't mean to pry.'
'Well this is all hush-hush you know. Privileged information. I'll know where the leak came from if any of this surfaces before Friday.'
'My discretion is assured sir. All our clients calls are treated in confidence.'
'As it should be. Now...'
'Certainly. Well, If you could go to the image option on the menu...'
* * *
'Thank you for that. I think I've got the hang of it now.'
'Happy to be of service sir. You should be able to use that method to animate anything you want.'
'I'm sure I'll have great fun doing so. Now all I have to do is get one of my programming guys to activate a little something once the slideshow is finished.'
'Oh really sir? Did you know that we have Zap-script wizards that allow you to automate a number of interactions with other programs.'
'Is that so? It happens that I would need to perform a couple of actions at the end of the presentation to give it a...a dramatic twist, shall we say.'
'As long as there is a standardised interface for whatever you need to do, such as an API or Web Service...'
'Web Service. That's what I have. A web address that needs a command sent to it.'
'That sounds like it would be very simple. You can right click on your image and create a button automatically. Right-click on the button, choose properties and click on the Zap-Script tab and choose the web service option.'
'You're going a bit fast there. Button. Properties. Ah yes. Tab. Web service. Okay, I just type the address in there and add in the command and that's it?'
'Well if you've got the web address in an email or something you can just cut and paste it to save any embarrassing mistakes arising from a typo.'
'Hah! No, I wouldn't want to do a 'Dr SawKoff' would I? Ahem! How do I know that
it works?'
'Well you could just click on it when you've exported it at the end to do a test run.'
'Hmmm. That could be tricky. I suppose I do have that disused warehouse I could try it out on.'
'Excuse me?'
'Nothing. Just talking out loud. Bad habit. My therapist has been trying to get me out the habit of externalising my thoughts in long-winded monologues, but occasionaly it slips out. Your privacy is assured?'
'Absolutely sir. I'm still not sure what your presentation is about entirely.'
'Oh I'm sure you'll be hearing all about it on the news, one way or another.'
'Is there anything else you need sir? More buttons, More animations?'
'No. No more buttons. I don't want to give them too many choices, it'll only confuse them and my demands are simple...I'm doing it again aren't I.'
'Possibly.'
'Well, I'll tell you this Stefan,'
'Steven, sir.'
'I'll tell you this. If all goes well at...this meeting, then I may have an opening
for you as you have been very helpful to me.'
'ummmm...thank you, sir. I am quite happy in my current job, though.'
'You may change your mind come Saturday.'
'Is there anything else I can help you with?'
'I think that's it, Stefan. Wish me luck?'
'I hope it all goes well for you sir.'
'For the sake of the world it had better go well for me!'
'Glad I could be of service sir.'
'Thank you for your help, once again. Good bye!'
'Goodbye sir, please call again with any further problems you may...'
